The new EventGhost web site and forum at .net

Postby jitterjames » Fri Feb 04, 2011 9:20 pm

Welcome to the new EventGhost.net forum. It should contain all the accounts, posts, attachments, and private messages that were on the old one. If anything seems to be broken or missing, please let us know, providing as much useful information as you can.

I have temporarily taken on the role as primary administrator of the web host and the forum. I am happy to hand these duties off, or to share them with any competent users who are willing to volunteer, and have the support of a few other users.

I think it would be nice to have 2 or 3 forum administrators, and maybe a few more moderators as well. Spam bots are increasingly a problem for forums (I know I have had problems on my own forums and bitMonster disabled new registration because of this problem). Obviously we want to allow new users to join the community so if anyone has experience in this area, especially with phpBB please speak up!

I am new to phpBB and I'm still trying to figure things out. Of course I am also busy with my own projects both private and professional, so please be patient with me. To be honest, EventGhost is not a big priority for me, but I feel strongly that the project should be preserved and allowed to grow, and I wanted to do my part to make sure that this happened. So here we are.

On of the first things I will try to do, is to set up a poll, to see if people would prefer to use the new style for the forum, or go back to the old "simpler" one. In either case, I think we will probably want to come up with a new header design that incorporates room for advertising which will be used to pay for hosting services, external advertising etc. This is just a suggestion, it is not up to me!

anyway welcome to the new forum, and if you are a new user, welcome to EventGhost... you are going to love it!

Lookin' Good Here.

My first request is for a new category.... something like "stuff".
A place to talk about stuff that may not be directly EG related.

Maybe we should call it:

Off topic -
Stuff that relates to EventGhost but not directly.

or something like that.

I will volunteer my time to help out. I just don't know about the competent part? But I am willing and able to learn.

Yup... sort of James.

Maybe something more like...
Stuff that relates to other stuff but not directly to EG stuff necessarily.

btw...
We need that lil' icon logo thingy that goes in the address bar and along with the bookmarks in the web browser.
Know what I mean?

Like seen here...
How to display your web site logo on the address bar and in the favorites list.

Maybe need is the wrong word...
Want.
That fits.

good point. It's done. You may need to empty your cache to see it.

I could use some help.

I was looking at putting our standard header at the top of the mediawiki page, but it's a real pita to work with. Does anyone have experience modifying the layout or "style" or whatever you call it, on a mediawiki site?

I don't have any knowledge about html/php/css, sorry

But i looked for some info and found this:
http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Skinning
http://www.wikihow.com/Create-a-MediaWi ... om-Scratch
http://www.wikihow.com/Create-a-MediaWi ... oBook-Skin
http://renareich.com/2009/10/13/modifyi ... wiki-skin/

Maybe an already changed Skin could be of help: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Ga ... Monobrooke

mediawiki-folder/docs/skin.txt wrote:== Custom CSS/JS ==

It is possible to customise the site CSS and JavaScript without editing any
source files. This is done by editing some pages on the wiki:

* [[MediaWiki:Common.css]] -- for skin-independent CSS
* [[MediaWiki:Monobook.css]], [[MediaWiki:Simple.css]], etc. -- for
skin-dependent CSS
* [[MediaWiki:Common.js]], [[MediaWiki:Monobook.js]], etc. -- for custom
site JavaScript

These can also be customised on a per-user basis, by editing
[[User:<name>/monobook.css]], [[User:<name>/monobook.js]], etc.

Thanks for sharing the news here. This sounds very interesting. Where can I find the poll? Is it still current or over already? Would be interesting to know. Are you satisfied with the new hosting services? I am also looking for a new [ a link was put here to www ix web hosting dot com for some reason...] and I am not quite sure which hosting provider I should choose. Maybe I would also choose the one your are using for this forum. Would really appreciate your recommendations.

the poll is here viewtopic.php?f=12&t=3047, but the results are in and the site will be staying as is.

Godaddy is OK. It is a huge company, I think one of the largest domain registrars in the world. Sometimes you will have problems with them (as with any service), but their customer service is actually very good, if you are willing to spend the time with them on the phone. They do not have the best reputation for hosting, although they are generally considered a good choice for domain registration. Their hosting prices are very competitive though, and generally the uptime is pretty good. Their web management interface is one of the most confusing things I have ever encountered, but once you find your way around it does allow you to get the job done. If you can't figure it out, you can call them and they will walk you through it. I probably would have given up on Godaddy, but honestly any time I have called for support, my faith in the company has been boosted. This is very unusual IMO.

It's getting to be that time of year.
Our one year registration of eventghost.net at Domain.com is coming near an end.

The details...
EVENTGHOST.NET
Created... 01/18/2011
Expires... 01/18/2012
Auto-renew... ON

We will still have 2 years of hosting with Go-Daddy.
When we first moved the site over I made the mistake of doing the registration and hosting with two different companies.
I won't do that again.
I suggest we transfer the next registration cycle over to Go-Daddy and we''ll have both services with one company.
Ideas? Thoughts or suggestions?

Donation time again?

I also think that talking more about doing some Google Adwords might be a good idea.
Maybe with some revenue coming in the site costs could take care of themselves.
It could maybe even pay for some remote control hardware that our coders could use to make new plugins/EG functionality and stuff. Just an idea.

if asked to do so, I can set up some ads using my existing adsense account which I have set up for VoxCommando.

Money will be sent to me, but I can easily keep track of what money comes from eventGhost and you'll just have to trust me to put that back into EventGhost.

If someone else wants this responsibility that's fine with me. If zian is already in charge of paying godaddy, then it might be easier if he sets up an adsense account.

I trust ya' James.
If you're willing to "share" your Adsence account I, for one, am all for it.
Do you have any ideas/opinions on what a site like EG might bring in with Adsence?
Just wondering.

Would/could you also do the set-up 'tween EG.net/Adsence?
That would pretty much just be a "one time deal"? Add some code and leave it?
BaddaBing done?
I dont have a clue... Just wondering again.

Also...
Do you do PayPal James?
I do. And when we took donations last I was able to easily pay GoDaddy using PayPal.
If need be we could transfer some funds between us to pay GoDaddy for a few years registration and the transfer.

In the mean time I'll look into the costs for the domain transfer from Domain.com to GoDaddy and a few years registration.
