Great idea Walter. But how? (does anybody know how to make that PayPal information public?)

m8, I thought you could just do that yourself, put the current donation amount in your footer. I trust you

I got curious how this forum/website/webspace-things work. So, last weekend i bought some webspace and a domain and played a bit around. Hopefully i have next weekend some time again to get more familiar with creating a website/forum.

Yup.
Very glad I can help.

Big thanks to you too vuego.

PayPal balance: $86.97 USD

I think we definitely have a year's worth of web site hosting now.
Considering we still have a month or so left to our eventghost.org closing we might as well keep accepting donations, until we get two years worth of hosting (or 3 or 4). Plus the longer we wait to buy the hosting the less money we would "waste" for hosting while both sites are still up.
Know what I mean?

And...
If ANYBODY is in contact with Bitmonster I'm wondering how he would like/need to go about doing this.
I have sent him a PM through the forum so I'll just wait to hear from him... I hope.
I KNOW I don't want to aggravate the guy with an inbox full of stuff from 30 different folks.

Thanks again vuego

Good stuff topix.
I just started another topic here...
eventghost.org, eventghost.biz, eventghost.net
viewtopic.php?f=2&t=3040

Maybe we could talk all about what you learn (and what I haven't lol).
I have learned it is hard.
I have learned I don't know what a table is for or how to create one properly.
I have learned that I did some things right... by luck.
I have also learned that where folders need to go at a website /www/root/etc/etc escapes me.

Thanks miljbee, I certainly appreciate it... but...
It isn't MY site. It wont be "mine".
It'll be mine just like it's EVERYBODY else's.

It would be perfectly fine by me if that when the change occurs nobody will even notice but for maybe a different URL.
I just want it to work first. Nothing special nothing added... EG just as normal.
After that and we get some HTML gurus that know what they/we are doing then we can do some other things.
(does that make sense?)

Maybe I'll stick some shell shaped soaps on the back of the toilet...
Or burn some incense or something... or maybe not. ;)
Or a snack bar. These chips are stale :(

Open the godaddy plan! Make sure you get a linux plan, this will make it super easy to set up phpBB. It is almost a one click operation (automated). It is also possible to set up a phpBB forum on their windows plans but you have to do it yourself. I don't know if there are some bugs with that setup or not.

If you need help let me know. I wouldn't wait, and I wouldn't worry about "wasting a month" on hosting. $6? Better to get the site set up now since there could be a few delays. You should be able to give all your info to godaddy for the .net domain name.

Once it is set up you should be able to get a database dump or backup or whatever it is called and "restore" it to the new forum. Again, I will try to help with this if you give me access, but you might as well go ahead with buying the plan since you have the paypal funds.

I wouldn't worry about putting everything in your name. We just need to make sure that at least 2 people have administrative access to the hosting and the forum. The only concern for you would be if you need to use a credit card which other people managing the hosting plan might get access to. If you are paying with payPal it is probably not a problem.

I would also like to suggest (again) that we set up a google ad banner (after the forum is up and running). Whatever money is left over after paying for hosting and paying back the donations can go towards advertising to gain new users. I think this could be a very effective way to help keep the project alive. More users = more ad revenue = more external advertising = more users... rinse and repeat.

btw, Godaddy makes mistakes sometimes, but they have good customer service. Their web service is OK but sometimes you need to spend some time on the phone with them. If you require a en English speaking person in North America to deal with that I will help.

jitterjames...
Done. We got the linux plan.

I tried to, once again last night, redirect eventghost.net (through domains.com) to the GoDaddy IP (that is now our's bought and paid for) - (through paypal.com btw) but I didn't realize till this morning that I used some outdated nameservers from godaddy. Changed them this morning and should be up and working in a few hours.

You want to help setup the godaddy/eventghost.net stuff?
I sure could use it.
I installed a simplemachines forum this morning and your right just a bunch of clicks. easy.
I did that just to see how simple adding an application was.

I'll be glad to send you any log-in info and passwords and such to let you get into the godaddy control panel so you can help (or do) the setup to get it ready for a data dump. Can you do that without "breaking stuff"? lol
I just looked at http://voxcommando.com . You did that?
Looks good.

Want the keys to GoDaddy so you can try to set us up?
So far the only things I have done there is...
Set up a home folder (why? I don't know.)
Installed the SimpleMachines forum just as a test (get rid of it if you like)
Got in through FTP.
I think I have the godaddy/eventghost.net dns settings worked out (might not)
You can check that if you like.
I'm pretty sure I have the domains.com (the registrar) pointed to the right place now.

Just say the world and I'll send you all the info you might need to get in there.
Want it through these forums or another e-mail?

To Do list...

get it ready for Bitmonster.

set up SVN/ websvn repo capabilities.
